    World Market

    Algeria

    Nortel is to provide GSM-R communication systems for two new lines in Algeria. One will run from Tabia to Mechiria, and the other from Bordj Bouarreridj to M’Sila.

    Australia

    Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia (CFCLA) has ordered 10 GE Cv43aci locomotives from United Group, Australia, with an option for a further 30. The standard-gauge locomotives will be used on intermodal and bulk freight trains across the country.
    • United Group has won $A 100 million ($US 97 million) worth of contracts recently. In addition to its order above, it will supply 315 iron-ore wagons to BHP Billiton, and 13 sulphuric acid tank wagons for Incitec Pivot’s operations in Townsville, Queensland.
    • Queensland Rail is to invest almost $A 200 million in new locomotives and wagons for its intermodal business. $A 187 million will be spent on 16 locomotives and 488 wagons, and $A 11 million on upgrading freight terminals in Forrestfield and Dry Creek.

    Brazil

    GE Transportation is winning orders for diesel locomotives it intends to produce in Brazil. MRS has ordered 85 C-44 EMI locomotives, and 64 AC-44s, and Vale is expected to order 51 locomotives for its metre-gauge operations and 147 for its 1600mm-gauge lines. These will be the first AC locomotives GE has built outside North America.
    • Latin American Logistics (ALL) has bought 50 EMD SD-40 diesel locomotives, which will be rebuilt and re-gauged for operation next year. The locomotives will cost Reais 110 million ($US 68.7 million).
    • Caterpillar, United States, has bought Brazilian engine, traction motor, and generator supplier MGE. The acquisition is the first by Caterpillar’s Progress Rail Services division outside the United States.
    • Progress Rail Services is also to import and re-gauge 40 to 50 diesel locomotives for lease to other railways on a variety of arrangements, including ‘power by the hour’.
    • Vale is buying 836 wagons from Amsted-Maxion, Brazil.

    Britain

    Wabtec is to refurbish 308 emu cars at a cost of £26 million for leasing company HSBC. The class 321 trains will be fitted with reliability and performance enhancements during the programme.

    China

    China Railway Group has won three contracts worth Yuan 2.95 billion ($US 430 million). Its electrification division has won a Yuan 617.7 million contract in the southwestern province of Guizhou, and another for Yuan 2 billion on the Wenzhou - Fuzhou Railway, while its engineering division has won a construction project in Hebei province worth Yuan 333 million. • Union Switch & Signal, United States, has won two contracts in China. The first is for fitment of equipment to allow trains to control platform screen doors, and the doors themselves on the 29.6km Line 2 East Extension of the Shanghai metro, and the second is for an 8.6km western extension to Line 10 to Hongqiao Airport. The contracts are worth $US 17.63 million and $US 4.68 million.
    • VTG, Germany, has bought a 50% stake in Chinese logistics company Cosco-Vopak Logistics. Trelleborg will supply 112 hourglass bearer springs for the secondary suspension.

    International

    Primefuels Kenya and Mirambo Holdings Limited are to invest in Rift Valley Railways, which operates the railways of Kenya and Uganda.
    • Vossloh has completed the sale of its Vossloh Infrastructure Services to Eurovia, a subsidiary of Vinci Group. The purchase cost is around Euros 150 million.

    Trelleborg Industrial, Britain, has won a second contract to supply CSR Zhuzhou with metalastik suspension components for a new batch of 12 SS5 locomotives destined for Iran.

    Ireland

    The Railway Procurement Agency has awarded Alstom a five-year contract to maintain 18 new LRVs on order for Dublin’s Luas Green Line. The Euros 15 million deal includes an option for a six-year extension.

    South Africa

    Transnet has awarded RailComm, United States, a contract to supply a yard automation system for Ermelo Yard in Mpumalanga Province. It is hoped the system will increase safety and cut dwell times at the yard.

    Spain

    Renfe has contracted a consortium of Bombardier and Talgo to maintain its 45 AVE S-130 high-speed trains until 2022. The 250km/h trains are maintained at Santa Catalina and Fuencarral, in Madrid.

    Turkey

    Dimetronic, Britain, has won a Euros 25 million contract to provide European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) signalling, and a traffic control centre for the Ankara - Konya high-speed line.
    • CAF, Spain, has been awarded a Euros 123 million contract by Izban, a joint venture of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, to supply 33 three-car suburban emus. The 25kV trains will have stainless steel bodyshells and capacity for 740 passengers. The first train will be delivered in early 2010.

    United States

    Miami-Dade Transit has ordered a new fare collection system from Cubic, United States, at a cost of $US 45 million. The new ticketing system will use contactless technology, and is planned to be interoperable with other transport agencies in South Florida.
    • Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority has awarded Cubic, United States, contracts worth $US 68 million to supply, install, and maintain ticket barriers and contactless smart card systems at metro and light rail stations.
    • Zeta-Tech is not supplying positive train control systems on 68 locomotives for Alaska Railroad, as reported in IRJ July, it is only an adviser on such matters.
