    RUSSIAN RAIL REVOLUTION

    An IRJ exclusive report by David Briginshaw, Editor-in-Chief In an interview with Russia’s transport minister, Mr Igor Levitin, he said that Russia will invest the huge sum of $375 billion to upgrade and expand its rail network by 2015. Two-thirds of the investment will be spent on upgrading the existing 86,000km network and building 8000km of new lines. The remainder will be spent on motive power and rolling stock. Most of RZD’s 20,000 locomotives will have to be replaced in the next 10 years at a cost of around $80 billion, and RZD will need thousands of new wagons and coaches.
